GALA PRESENTATION – 2022 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
OPENING NIGHT GALA SELECTION - 2022 ROME FILM FESTIVAL
Featuring a terrific ensemble cast, award-winning writer/director Francesca Archibugi’s profoundly moving new drama - based on Sandro Veronesi’s international bestseller - follows a fascinating, wondrous life, from childhood through adulthood.
Ophthalmologist Marco Carrera (Pierfrancesco Favino, The Traitor, Padrenostro) - is 'the hummingbird,' of the film’s title, a man who appears to stay still as the world around him changes. Drawing on the strength of his memories, the story weaves from the early 1970s to the near future, charting Marco’s myriad relationships – his brilliant but unhappily married parents (Laura Morante & Sergio Albelli), his brother and sister, a platonic love affair by the sea with the enigmatic Luisa (Bérénice Bejo), marriage to Marina (Kasia Smutniak) in Rome and starting a family of his own - and his uncanny talent for gambling. Along the way, Marco receives the help of his psychoanalyst (Nanni Moretti), who teaches him how to welcome the most unexpected changes of direction.
Beautifully photographed by Sorrentino regular Luca Bigazzi, THE HUMMINGBIRD is a surprising and deeply moving reinvention of the family saga, an elegant, sweeping story that offers all the satisfaction of long-form narrative.
