Stranger Eyes - poster- a film by Yeo Siew Hua
Accomplished and enjoyable. A moving, moody reflection on social isolation and alienation. Amid its consistently tense, paranoid thriller trappings, Yeo’s film also functions in close-up, as a bittersweet, slightly broken-hearted character study, and a paean to lost era of community and trust.
A moving meditation on our human dislocation from each other. Yeo succeeds at crafting an original vision
A slow-burning film that toys with our expectations. Sits comfortably alongside such classic voyeuristic thrillers as 'Rear Window', 'Blow Up' and 'The Conversation'.
Director: Yeo Siew Hua
Cast: Wu Chien-ho, Lee Kang-sheng, Anicca Panna, Vera Chen

The first Singaporean feature to premiere in Official Competition at the Venice International Film Festival, acclaimed writer/director Yeo Siew Hua’s gripping new surveillance thriller centres on a couple whose secrets are exposed after their young daughter goes missing.

Singapore, modern day. Junyang (Wu Chien-ho) and Peiying (Anicca Panna) must confront the unimaginable when their child vanishes from a playground after her father is momentarily distracted. As the police begin their investigation, the couple find an unsettling package at the doorstep of their apartment: surreptitious video footage of their daily lives taken before and after the disappearance, including from their most intimate moments. The detectives set up extra security cameras around their home to catch the voyeur – with their lonely neighbour Wu (a superb Lee Kang-sheng) falling under immediate suspicion – but under the scrutiny of CCTV observing them from all sides, Junyang and Peiying’s own deceptions to each other and those around them emerge...

Echoing the impact of Michael Haneke's Hidden and Chang-dong Lee's Burning, the unpredictable and enthralling STRANGER EYES is not only a compelling mystery, but also a thought-provoking social commentary on both the need for privacy and the desire to be seen.
