Superbly acted. A tough, taut character study of a woman driven to increasingly reckless and dangerous acts. Knudsen is magnetic.
Fascinating. A compelling character study.
Compelling. A gripping moral tale of crime and punishment that maintains a bruising hold. Knudsen endows her character with such a tortured sense of right and wrong that Eva is able to become a fully fleshed stand-in for the moral dissonance of Danish society.

The eagerly anticipated new film from writer/director Gustav Möller, whose 2018 debut The Guilty was a breakout hit, SONS is a gripping moral thriller that offers an extraordinary showcase for the remarkable Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, Wildland, Westworld) in the leading role.

Idealistic Eva (Babette Knudsen) works in the minimum-security ward of a correctional facility, overseeing the incarcerated men with an almost maternalistic sense of compassion, guiding them in meditations and showing genuine interest in - and empathy for - their wellbeing. But all this changes when Mikkel (Sebastian Bull), a swaggering offender, is transferred to the facility, and without revealing her motives to her superiors, Eva requests to be reassigned to his high-security block. So begins an unsettling and dangerous game of cat and mouse in which Eva’s increasingly unhealthy preoccupation with Mikkel challenges her belief in restorative justice, and places much more than her job at stake…

Demonstrating the skill of his award-winning debut was no fluke, Moller’s sinewy and atmospheric new thriller packs a genuine punch, and is a must-see for fans of both Scandi noir and its phenomenal star, who delivers arguably a career-best performance.
