Exceptional. A vivid, humane evocation of what it’s like to be 19 years old, with the world at your feet and over your head. Should be a star-making performance by Manfredi Marini.
Unflinchingly honest about what it’s like to be 19, and, for the most part, totally lost. Tortorici’s insistence on capturing that feeling while avoiding the usual narrative tropes is what makes his film fascinating. In some ways, Tortorici is carrying on a tradition of Italian art films, including Fellini’s I Vitelloni and Pasolini’s Accattone, about disaffected youth who are part of a lost generation.
Formally audacious and refreshingly original.

From debut writer/director Giovanni Tortorici and producer Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), NINETEEN evocatively captures the once-in-a-lifetime freedom, confusion, and marvel of a defining year for a curious young Sicilian student as his adult life begins.

2015. Handsome 19-year-old Leonardo (exceptional newcomer Manfredi Marini) leaves behind his overbearing mother and picturesque hometown of Palermo to join his sister in London and study business. However, the initial excitement of living abroad - and the lure of unrestricted partying - wanes quickly, and Leonardo abruptly transfers to the University of Siena in Tuscany to pursue his true interest: literature. There, enamoured with the medieval city, but at odds with his professors and peers, Leonardo retreats into his own world, ignoring the curriculum to delve into classic early-modern Italian texts independently. Flooded with images and ideas, his inner world blooms.

A year later, Leonardo is in Turin, where he meets a kindred spirit who perhaps holds the key to unlocking his innermost desires…

Elevating its heartfelt narrative with flair, the intelligent and invigorating NINETEEN leaves a strong impression, and positions Tortorici as a filmmaker to watch.
