Hammarskjöld – Fight For Peace - film still - A film by Per Fly
Has the intrigue and pace of a political thriller. Fly makes accessible the world of politics, betrayals and vested interests in which Hammarskjold was operating. The decision to delve deeper into his personality makes him a more rounded, human figure and his loss all the more moving.
Compelling historical narrative and central persona. Fly’s film is neatly positioned between celebrating Hammarskjöld as the clearest thinker in the room and seeing him as partially authoring his demise, the victim of a saviour complex.

Featuring a commanding performance from Mikael Persbrandt (In A Better World, Sex Education) as charismatic Swedish diplomat and economist Dag Hammarskjöld - the man John F. Kennedy once called “the greatest statesman of our century” - acclaimed director Per Fly’s gripping new political thriller HAMMARSKJÖLD - FIGHT FOR PEACE depicts a man torn between his hidden personal life and his dedication to his global responsibilities.

New York City, 1961. At the peak of the Cold War, Hammarskjöld (Persbrandt) is at the pinnacle of his power, serving his seventh year as Secretary-General of the United Nations. After decolonisation, he takes it upon himself to bring peace to the African countries, thwarting plans of powerful entrepreneurs and world leaders to further their exploit resources. But, when his old friend Peter shows up in New York, he begins to question his perseverance to his job and vision. When UN peacekeepers are killed in open battle in the Congo, Hammarskjöld decides to impose peace by new measures and leads UN troops into their first wartime operation. Although aware his enemies may plot against him, he boards a plane in a desperate attempt to negotiate a ceasefire…
